40 percent of marriages in Yazd are relatives, which is 20 percent in the country.
The Welfare Directorate of Yazd province said the visit was made by
Deputy Minister of Science, Research and Technology at the Meybod
Genetics Research Center. He said: "Having a genetic counseling and
screening plan, the welfare has been working to prevent the birth of
newborns."
Dr. Efati added: "In this regard, we have 600 abortions in the
province, which has been performed on the basis of pre-natal diagnosis
through specialist and diagnostic facilities of the province and in
cooperation with forensic medicine.
He states that many diseases have a genetic background, saying:
"Unfortunately, the focus of prevention is not in the Ministry of
Health.
Director General of Welfare in Yazd province added: "Treatment for
prevention in the country is a priority and the country's health is not
based on prevention.
Referring to Article 75 of the Law of the Sixth Development Plan of
the country on the implementation of genetic screening, he said: Despite
this, insurance still does not support genetic counseling and testing.
The
visit highlighted the collaboration between the Ministry of Science's
Research Vice-Chancellor and the Center for Welfare Genetics Research in
Meybod.
