Issue 38 permits for abortion in Yazd

An expert on the Office for the Prevention of Disabilities of the Yazd Welfare Organization announced the issuance of 38 cases of abortion due to genetic disorders during the first six months of 1397 in the province.
Saeedeh Mozaffari, in connection with genetic screening in Yazd, said: Advice and testing of pre-marriage and pre-birth genetic counseling is one of the services that serves the well-being of Yazd province to prevent the birth of disabled children.
He said that there are currently 13 genetic services clinics in Yazd province, which operate under the auspices of the welfare organization, acknowledging that there are 3 public genetic counseling clinics and 10 private genetic counseling clinics.
Mozafari said: Despite the importance of carrying out these experiments, unfortunately, its costs are not covered by insurance but the Welfare Organization pays a fee for these tests.
An expert on prevention of disabilities in the provincial department of welfare said that last year the Welfare Organization spent approximately 400 million USD on genetic tests for patients in the organization, families with at least one genetically disabled child and other people.
He states that counseling and testing services are carried out at government-funded state clinics, "Welfare beneficiaries receive these services in government centers for free, and those who can not afford the full cost of genetic counseling can help with the leaflet." And receive services at a discount of 50%.
Mozafari emphasized the effective role of genetics in the development of disability: "Fortunately, by preventing them, we were able to prevent the inclusion of people with disabilities in society.
"It's good that obstetricians and gynecologists are well-informed, and they refer almost all pregnant women to counseling and testing genetic screening," he said.
An expert on the prevention of disabilities in the Yazd Welfare Organization said: "During the first six months of 1997, there were 38 cases of legal abortions due to genetic disorders, which had a significant reduction compared to previous years.
He acknowledged the cause of this decline: during the 94 and 95 years, the abortion statistics for genetic disorders in Yazd province were high; from 1994 there were 584 legal abortions due to genetic disorders.
Mozafari, referring to the fact that since 1995, genetic counseling was forbidden before marriage and individuals were referred from marriage offices to genetic counseling centers, added: "Pre-marriage counseling and prevention of disabilities in high schools for elementary students of the eleventh and eleventh Prenatal screening tests were one of the effective factors in reducing abortion statistics in Yazd province.
